Bass-Jons' 6th stop on their tournament trail was the Three Rivers event, fishing the Nottoway, Blackwater, and Chowan out of the Route 258 launch. A large field (20 boats) was rewarded with a beautiful day for fishing, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures that topped out around 80 degrees with very little wind. The Nottoway has a reputation with the club for producing good numbers of fish, but fish are typically smaller compared to other venues on the trail. While that was true for many teams, the big news was Roccoa Spurlin's 6 lb 14 oz lunker, which took over as the Lunker of the Year. If Roccoa's fish is able to hang on to take the award, the Nottoway River producing Lunker of the Year would be a major surprise to those that have fished this river system with Bass-Jons over the years. A few other larger fish were weighed, including a 4lb 12oz fish weighed by Jim Carlson/Michael Taylor and a 4lb 8oz fish caught by Chaz Carrington/Scott Scheil. Most of the larger fish came on plastics or jigs.
The rest of the field caught fish on a variety of techniques. Some anglers reported catching double-digit numbers of fish, and fish were caught on plastics, senkos, jigs, crankbaits, and topwaters. The winning bag was brought in by Roccoa Spurlin and Arty Spurlin, who had a solid 12 lbs 4 oz.limit that was anchored by their 6 lb 14 oz big fish. Second place went to Chaz Carrington and Scott Scheil with 11 lbs 8 oz, and third went to "Moose" Wells and Joey Wells with 10 lbs 12 oz.
The angler of the year race had it's second lead change of the year, with Chaz Carrington retaking the top spot on the strength of his second place finish. Mike Peregrine is only two points behind in second, while "Moose" Wells and Rick Burton are tied for the third spot. With ten tournaments remaining, there are plenty of opportunities for anglers to make a move in the standings. The next event is on May 21st at Lake Meade. This will be the second stop of the season at Lake Meade, where Chaz Carrington is the defending champion.
