Tournament Report

The years 2nd Tournament Event for the Beaver Dam "Big Bash" was probably had record winds for any "Big Bash" in history. In some areas it was calm, however the wind blew from the North straight down the main lake, causing white caps, swells and even sea foam. Most anglers sacrificed fighting the winds and clustered into any protective areas that they could find. Air temps can't seem to co-operate during the tournaments it seems because this was also another cold day, with the temps reaching about 55-degrees for high. The sun was up most of the tournament day, but it was still cold. Water temps were in the lower 60’s prior to the tournament, but with the cold front that moved in and held for the past couple of days, it dropped it down to 55-degrees and didn’t increase much at all on the lake.

Surprisingly, there were only 49 Teams registered and not 50, which is unusual to not have a full field of 50 Teams. Of the 49 teams, there were 90 anglers fishing on this.

Because this wasn’t idle conditions for site fishing, anglers reported that it would take between 12- to 14lbs to win the event and not many limits to be weighed in. The technique/pattern on this day was dominated by fishing smaller plastics and spinnerbaits. Anglers caught fish on other lures, but fishing plastics slowly where the fish were backing off of the spawning flats was the most productive. Some deeper points near the flats also produced well using spinnerbaits. Reports came in from some anglers saying that they caught a few fish on beds, but there weren’t many on them; most have pulled off due to the cold front. As usual, the dominating area was the Rte 606 and the Gentry Cove creek arms.

For the amount of boats fishing, there were only 14 limits brought to the scales; 15 boats didn’t weigh in a fish. There were 115 fish weighed in (2-dead), bringing in the days total tournament weight to a decent 211.95lbs (Avg of 1.84lbs per fish); considering the conditions people were fishing under.

Richard Thurston generated enough weight, fishing by alone, to beat the entire field of anglers; mostly whom were teamed up with other anglers. Coming in 2nd Place was Jerry Jenkins and his partner, followed by Lonnie & Kevin Childress. Big Fish for the day went to Waclaw Zabdyr & Todd Godfrey.
