Tournament Report by Neal Robinson
The Boot’Legg Trail 30 Teams in attendance, which consisted of 56 total anglers fishing; the largest field thus far in Boot'Legg history. The forecast tends to plaque the Boot'Legg Trail, so it seems. Here is is nearly the Month of May, yet the Trail had to fish yet another cold front, a high of 57-degrees was called for, partly sunny and WINDY!!! Water Temps that morning started off at 62-degrees and some anglers found it to reach up to 64-degrees later in the day. This was supposed to be a spawning tournament, where the fish should have been on the beds rather strong; it wasn’t the case. Sure the predominant pattern for the day was to fish for spawners, however, those fish on the beds were real spooky and were not easy to catch. Anglers had to pretty much take a super-stealthy approach to the fish, making quiet presentations and to have the patients of a statue. Or Run-N-Gun the beds until they were able to find a fish solid on the bed. Fish still seem to be in their beginning stages on Burnt Mills; there have been 3 tournaments in a row held on this lake and none of them caught fish on the beds that well. Makes it good for anglers looking to hit a lake later in the Spring of the year, which are late on the spawn. Of the 30 boats, there were only 12 limits brought in; those who caught limits struggled pretty much to get those; not many anglers were culling. Of the fish being caught, there were some nice chunks, just not enough of them. A total of 80 fish were caught and unfortunately, 2 were brought in dead. Also the Tournament Total Weight tipped the scales off at 226.96lbs; an average of 2.83lbs per fish weighed in. A victorious congratulation goes out to the team of Brad Webb & Chris Campbell who brought in the winning sack of the day. The team of Matt Whitwell & Matt McKinney had the largest sack, but due to a penalty dropped from 1st Place to 2nd by 1/100 of a pound…OUCH…. Not too far from that were the team of Brian & Nate Hollis, who also brought to the scales the “Big Fish” of the day. In 4th you had Kevin Mills and rounding out the Top 5 were Tim Langdon & Todd Thompson. Below are the entire Tournamnet Field Standings... Special Thanks: A lot of anglers helped out today and this allowed for a smooth beginning and an end. That morning, we had Rick Williams & Bubba Driscoll assist us with Livewell Check. Bubba Driscoll also assisted us, in full Traffic Patrol Gear, with parking. Parking was tight and maneuvering was just a confusing. However, thanks to Bubba’s quick thinking and entertainment, he had taken the helm to ensure anglers didn’t create a traffic jam. At the end of the day, we had Brian & Bobby Kinsey assisting us with the weigh in. Bobby took control of weighing the fish for us, while we also had Brian Kinsey assist with some of the paperwork, ensuring that we make the weigh process quick so that we could get fish back in the water. Thanks Mike Gizara for bringing additional bags to the scales. This helped out in 2 ways; it brought in a good rotation of bags for the amount of boats we had, which kept of smooth flow of fish coming into the scales and it helped replace some of the other bags that had leaks in them. We can’t forget, Charlie Workman and Tim Ackal of Bass Chaser's. They assisted with the photos, making sure we had good shots of the better sacks that were brought in. We would like to mention also that Charlie Workman is part of the Gambler Pro Staff and he also provided the Boot’Legg Trail with Gambler Products to the winners and Gambler Products catalogs.
