| The first Tournament of the season for the Boot'Legg Trail was held on the Southside and the weather that came with it was cold and windy for those that showed. The turnout was great, the Season opener brought out 25 teams, which consisted of 46 total anglers who couldn't wait any longer for the season to start. The weather that morning was brisk and cold, but with little to no wind starting out. Unfortunately for the anglers, the wind picked up and it got bitter out on the water. It was pretty much cloudy all day and the air temps didn't get much over 45-degrees, which seemed typical for this time of year with the winds coming out of the North. The water temps weren't any better, ranging from 43- to 46-degrees at best and the water clarity was fairly clear. Some of the old veterans showed up and those who finished in the Top 5 are no surprises to anyone. Everyone knows that on most days, a few well-known anglers are the ones to beat on the Southside lakes and this day was no exception. It was reported that there weren't any TRUE patterns for the day other than fish as hard as you can. Most anglers fortunate to catch fish seemed to have success fishing Crankbaits from what I gathered; focusing around main lake structure; points, flats and creek channels. Basically, anglers were targeting staging fish that are looking for an early spawn, with nearby access to deeper waters during those quick drops in temps. I am not sure, but I don't believe any of the fish were caught in the coves. Many anglers had to sift thru an lot of pickeral on this day. No one was short of a pickeral story in this tournament, which seemed to be the only action that the majority of anglers had all day. There was only two known reports of a missed fish that was a for sure bass, everything else that bit was caught. Strangley enough, no one really lost any pickeral either; not like that's a good thing. Our congrats goes out to the team of Bobby Kinsey and Randy Broughman for their 1st Place finish which was anchored by a 7.12lb kicker. Unfortunately, for Bobby and Randy, Dallas "Bubba" Eure and Charles Goff were not to be outdone and brought in the Lunker of the day at 7.24lbs. |
