BOOT'LEGG EVENT
Lake Cohoon
13 March 2005

Tournament Report

The Boot'Legg Trail held its 2nd Tournament of the season, again on the Southside. This was another great turnout for the season, bringing out 25 teams for the second time in two events, consisting of 45 total anglers. The lake drawing was done by Bobby Kinsey & Randy Broughman, who were our last tournament winners. The lake drawn for the day was Lake Cohoon.

As usual, the weather has been consistent with providing us with an uncomfortable, cold North wind. However, this time it was a bit more tolerable with the sun being able to peak out of the clouds from time to time. Somehow, it was reported that the air temps were in the mid-50’s, but it never felt like that. With the cold winds blowing and the cold water temps, it felt like it was in the low 40’s. Water temps ranged from 46-degress in the morning to 48-degrees in the afternoon. Some anglers managed to find some areas that reached 50-degrees, deep in the coves and the water clarity was about 3 feet for the most part.

The pattern for the days was to fish and fish hard; which as of lately seems to be repetitive for the past few tournaments in the area. At least this time there was one true dominating bait that worked for most anglers…The Crankbait…this was the talk after the event and as typical most anglers were targeting main lake structure; points, flats and creek channels where staging fish are looking to pull up for the spawn. Just as the weather has not disappointed the anglers with miserable weather, the pickerel continued putting on a good show for anglers as well.

Congratulations to the team of James Williams & Gene North for their 1st Place finish, anchored with a 7.30lb mule, which also took Big Fish. Following close behind were Casey Griggs & Wayne Hughes placing 2nd and coming up in 3rd Place was John “Rebel” Plyler & Jerry Patterson.

Special Thanks: Thanks to Nate Hollis for providing the photos, Ron Turley who assisted us with the Weigh-In, Mike Gizara for allowing us to use the lakes Concession facility for organizing the weigh in and Gene North who provided some personal words of condolences and a set the tone for a moment of silence for the recently passed Robert Kinsey, an icon to the Tidewater Fishing Community who will truly be missed.
