Tournament Report

Beaver Dam "Big Bash" held there 1st Tournament Event on what would be considered the best day of the year as far as the weather goes. Air temps were supposed to reach a high of about 55-degrees, but it's hard to believe that out on the water when the wind is blowing and the lake water temps aren't factored in to equation. Even still, the wind wasn't too bad when considering that we are talking about Beaver Dam, which seems to act like a wind tunnel most days. The sun was up most of the time which helped anglers keep a bit warm; there were anglers who were brave enough to take off their coats and strip down to their T-Shirts, which wasn't very understandable, but to each his own.

As the "Big Bash" does every year, their first couple of tournaments brings in a full field of anglers, which consisted of 50 teams and 93 anglers participating on this day; the largest tournament field recorded this year for any event.

Most anglers reported that it would take between 12- to 14lbs to win the event, thinking also that there would be plenty of limits weighed in as well. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. One team found the Zone and destroyed the field of anglers fishing. They were surrounded by anglers that morning and actually culling early on, while others struggled to get a bite. The pattern on this has been consistent with other events during this time of year; fishing areas that were adjacent to spawning areas. The techniques dominating techniques used today were fishing Plastics & Jigs. Just a week prior, it was Stickbaits on this lake, with the Jigs as the next best thing. Hardly anything else, outside of Plastics & Jigs worked with any success.

It was so tough on this day, only 2 limits were brought into the scales and of those two limits, only 1 team was culling. With 50 boats in the field, there were only 58 fish brought into the scales and 24 teams blanked. The total tournament weight went a mere 152.75lbs.

The winning team went to the father and son team of Quillie & Robert Countiss, who obliterated the field by bringing in nearly a 22-pound string of fish. It should also be mentioned that they placed 2nd and tied with Big Fish last weekend on Beaver Dam, fishing with the Little Creek Anglers Club. The 2nd Place team consisted of Gerald Gentry & Jimmy West, followed by Alan Gallagher & Kevin Johnson in 3rd Place.

The "Big Fish" Honors went to Steven Hersom. Steve Hersom fishes with Calvert Crankers, in Northern VA/Maryland to fish this event. He and several other anglers drove 2-hours fish the event and went back home with a little change in their pockets. Congratulations to all you guys for your wins. Here is the entire field of anglers and how they placed...
