BOOT'LEGG EVENT
Beaver Dam Swamp Reservoir

| The Boot'Legg Trail held its 3rd Tournament of the season, but only the 1st one on the Upper Peninsula area here at Beaver Dam Swamp Reservoir, located in Gloucester, VA. The Boot'Legg Trail has had several tournaments here previously, but this was the largest turnout for this lake which brought in 17 boats (34 Anglers); nothing spectacular, but more promising that it has been in the past. Considering also, there had been a date conflict with the Little Creek Anglers Club having a tournament on the same day; something that couldn't be avoided. However, there shouldn't be any other known conflicts with them and we should start turning out about 25 or so boats when we are scheduled there again. The weather wasn't bad, it was actually pretty good. Air Temps were around the mid-50's, while the water temps that morning started out at 49- to 50-degrees and got up to 55-degrees. Wind was way down, which is a rarity on this lake. The water clarity was fairly clear on most of the lake, but on the North ends of the lake and the backs of most of the creeks were murky to muddy due to the recent rains that pounded the area for the past couple of days. The pattern for the day to catch fish wasn't too difficult for most anglers. From reading recent reports, anglers continued to target pre-spawn areas where fish are stacking up. Most of the fish being caught are Buck Bass according to Dock Talk; those anglers culling fish weren't gaining anymore than a few hundredths of a pound, if that, with each fish being caught. Made for a busy day, but frustrating for those hoping that a good fish would be among one of those several fish being caught. For the most part, the Techniques used were using straight tail finesse worms and Jig'N Pigs. Some fish were coaxed into nabbing a Spinnerbug and hard Jerkbaits, but not many were successful using those techniques...PLASTICS & JIGS were the key today. For many of those who attended the tournament, it wasn't a surprise that Quillie & Robert Countiss won it. They have been nothing, but dominating on Beaver Dam these past 3 weekends. Two weeks ago, they took 2nd Place with the Little Creek Anglers Club. The following weekend, they competed in the "Big Bash" Event, against 50 Teams and took 1st Place with 21.95lbs. This past weekend, they took 1st Place once again, except this time there weren't going to be just shy of 22lbs, they hit the 22lb mark and nearly went 23lbs for the day. Now that they are on a role, can they keep it up?! The Little Creek Anglers Club fishes out on Beaver Dam next weekend, can Team Countiss do it again?! It remains to be seen. Congratulations, Quillie & Robert Countiss for yet another win. Taking 2nd Place and fishing Solo, was Gerald Gentry, who also took Big Fish Honors. Running 3rd goes to the team of James Williams & Gene North. Special Thanks: Thanks to Beaver Dam Park Staff Member Chris & Mel for allowing us to have a smooth morning. Special thanks to Chuck Hyde who had assisted the Boot'Legg Trail during the week on Administrative matters and the Staff would expect of us to do to ensure that we do not interfere with normal operation at the Park. Thanks to the many anglers who participated and cooperated with the Tournament Officials in order to make this a Quick & Easy process for us. Some Anglers assisted voluntarily to help out at the weighin with various things that sped up the weighin process, which ensured that we would be able to release the fish in a quick and orderly manner. We also needed an extra hand with the Photos, so Chalmer Crews assisted us in that department. Thanks to everyone that showed up, it was a good turnout and our next Boot'Legg Tournament on Beaver Dam will be April 9th 2005. |
