Caught this nice Lake Smith Toad finesse fishing a 3 inch Riverside red shad woolly hawg. As you can see the damage to her tail she was on the bed hard! When I first saw her I thought she was a carp. First throw on the bed she inhaled it. Thank goodness there was no wood in the area, using 6 pound test she took me to the open waters. She jumped 3 times before I could get a net under her. I normally do not use 6 pound test when fishing Smith, but I was experimenting with my new ultra light rig. Every jump I thought she was going to shake the hook off. Today was my day! My first Smith Citation. Took her to Oceans East for a certified weight of 8-12. She was 24 inches long. Bob Bullen tells me that Tim Ackel was working this fish for a few days. Don't worry Tim I put her back in the Lake for you to catch one day. I caught a total of 13 fish with the next biggest going 4lbs and the rest between 1-3 pounds. My best 5 around 18 pounds. Great day on Smith!
*** Burnt Mills Fishing Report 18 Feb 06 - by Mike Cooper
Jim with his 6.2 lb and Mike's Pickerel
Fished with Jim Carlson at Burnt Mills today from 7-2. Weather was great in the morning, but snow/rain mix in the afternoon made for a unique day!! Jim was on the Bass all day, with several 2-3 pounder range and a nice 6.2. All fish came on the infamous silver buddy in about 10-15 feet of water, around wood. I had a day of pickerel, one citation class and a few smaller ones. All came on a crank bait around wood on steep banks. We both had several lost fish on the buddy, but overall a great day. Hopefully not the last on Burnt Mills before it closes. Mike

Tim with his and Jim with his fish.

Tim with the days catch.
- USMC Colonel Jim Leavis and I went out Saturday on Lake Bradford for some action. He had been seeing the bass I was catching and had to go. The day started out with a bang about 100 yards from the landing. I was fishing a spinnerbait and he was chunking a crankbait, we were trying to get a reaction strike. The weather was right for it. Well I got to an area that had an isolated bush and I pitched a Junebug/black Jig and Pig to see if I could finesse a big girl out of there. I had a sneaky feeling one was laying in wait. My pig hit bottom and I waited two seconds and then twitched it a couple of times. Bam, I felt the thump and my line was moving fast. I reeled down and sunk the hook into her and it looked like I was fighting a submarine. She was boiling the water and turning up silt and finally I was able to get her along side the boat and lipped her. She was over 7.12 on Jim's digital scale but I measured her length and she was 24.5" long and I estimated her girth at 16 to 17. The highest reading I had on his scale was 8.2 and it fluctuated from 7.12 to 8.2 so I just took the lowest reading. Your guess is as good as mine. I'd have to say she was 8. Then I had a couple more both really nice chunks. One had to be close to 6 if not over a little and the other was 4 plus and Jim kicked in a 2.0 to 2.8. Not a bad 4 hours of fishing. We started at 0830 and finished at 1230. I had something to do. I think I could have caught more big fish if I had stayed all day. The bite was picking up when we were leaving. An honest guess on that 4 fish sack would be roughly 20 lbs. Tell me what you think.
- Water temp was 54 degrees, it was overcast to partly sunny, not much of a breeze. We caught the fish close to the banks in 1 to 3 feet of water. I tend to believe these fish are going to spawn soon. I put them all back for you to go try your luck.

Seems the fishing is hot on Lake Bradford last week with Bass-Jon’s members Tim Ackal, Mike Cresini, Charley Workman, Shaun Peregoy and Stan Stockton on different outtings bringing in nice bags of fish. Catching them on crankbaits, spinnerbaits and pig&jigs. The smallest fish you will see in these pictures is 2.8 pounds and the biggest is well....the biggest one Tim dropped her in the water before landing her. It was Charlie’s big'un as he calls her and she was massive. His little dip net could not handle her and since she was hooked on a crankbait she came flopping off and right through my hands. I'd give her eight pounds easy maybe more.

Former Rule-9 member, Dave Buchanan, and I went to Newport News Park on Friday, January 13th. We didn't know what kind of day to expect on Friday the 13th but as you can see, Dave had a good day. This was the only bass of the day and weighed 4-11 and was 20" long. We also caught numerous pickerel. All fish were caught on crankbaits. Dave has been in the zone to start the new year. We have fished twice and Dave has caught the only bass on both trips, the first fish weighed 3 lbs and this one 4-11. Not a bad start to the 2006 season. Great Job Dave !!!
