**** Boot'Legg Beaver Dam Swamp Reservoir - 26 March 05

Quillie Countiss & Robert Countiss take 1st again!!

The Boot'Legg Trail held its 3rd Tournament of the season, but only the 1st one on the Upper Peninsula area here at Beaver Dam Swamp Reservoir, located in Gloucester, VA. The Boot'Legg Trail has had several tournaments here previously, but this was the largest turnout for this lake which brought in 17 boats (34 Anglers); nothing spectacular, but more promising that it has been in the past. Considering also, there had been a date conflict with the Little Creek Anglers Club having a tournament on the same day; something that couldn't be avoided. However, there shouldn't be any other known conflicts with them and we should start turning otu about 25 or so boats when we are scheduled there again. The weather wasn't bad, it was actually pretty good. Air Temps were around the mid-50's, while the water temps that morning started out at 49- to 50-degrees and got up to 55-degrees. Wind was way down, which is a rarity on this lake. The water clarity was fairly clear on most of the lake, but on the North ends of the lake and the backs of most of the creeks were murky to muddy due to the recent rains that pounded the area for the past couple of days. The pattern for the day to catch fish wasn't too difficult for most anglers. From reading recent reports, anglers continued to target pre-spawn areas where fish are stacking up. Most of the fish being caught are Buck Bass according to Dock Talk; those anglers culling fish weren't gaining anymore than a few hundredths of a pound, if that, with each fish being caught. Made for a busy day, but frustrating for those hoping that a good fish would be among one of those several fish being caught. For the most part, the Techniques used were using straight tail finesse worms and Jig'N Pigs. Some fish were coaxed into nabbing a Spinnerbug and hard Jerkbaits, but not many were successful using those techniques...PLASTICS & JIGS were the key today.
For many of those who attended the tournament, it wasn't a surprise that Quillie & Robert Countiss won it. They have been nothing, but dominating on Beaver Dam these past 3 weekends. Two weeks ago, they took 2nd Place with the Little Creek Anglers Club. The following weekend, they competed in the "Big Bash" Event, against 50 Teams and took 1st Place with 21.95lbs. This past weekend, they took 1st Place once again, except this time there weren't going to be just shy of 22lbs, they hit the 22lb mark and nearly went 23lbs for the day. Now that they are on a role, can they keep it up?! The Little Creek Anglers Club fishes out on Beaver Dam next weekend, can Team Countiss do it again?! It remains to be seen.

Congratulations, Quillie & Robert Countiss for yet another win. Taking 2nd Place and fishing Solo, was Gerald Gentry, who also took Big Fish Honors. Running 3rd goes to the team of James Williams & Gene North.

Special Thanks:

Thanks to Beaver Dam Park Staff Member Chris & Mel for allowing us to have a smooth morning. To the many anglers who participated and cooperated with the Tournament Officials in order to make this a Quick & Easy process for us. Some Anglers assisted volunteerily to help out at the weighin with various things that sped up the weighin process, which ensured that we would be able to release the fish in a quick and orderly manner. We needed an extra hand with the Photos, so Chalmer Crews assisted us in that department. Thanks to everyone that showed up, it was a good day and there are going to be better days coming VERY SOON!!! Next Boot'Legg Tournament on Beaver Dam will be April 9th 2005.

TOURNAMENT REPORT: It wasn’t a bad day overall; there were only 17 boats that participated, but could have had more boats. The winners for the LCA Tournament Event went to JC DeBose & Clarence Jenkins who had an awesome day of which they didn’t even catch a fish until 11:00am. There wasn’t anything in specific to what peopler were catching fish on; Crankbaits, Plastic Worms, Jerkbaits and Wacky Worms. Fish were caught all over the lake, but mainly on points. It was reported by the team of Ricky West & Jerry Jenkins that they had a 9 plus that broke Jerry off at the boat. Ricky had forgotten the net and tried to hand line the fish in and the fish lunged one last time popping the line in half. Needless to say, they were devastated; it was painful enough just to listen to the story being told.

*** Newport News Fishing Report, 25 March 05 - Bob Bullen

Ronnie Lentz with a couple of his nice ones of the day!!

Bob Bullen with a few of mine.

  • Decided to head over to Newport News and fish with Ronnie Lentz from Rule-9 fame. It’s never to early to start the trash talk about our annual club vs. club tourney at the end of the year (Bass’n-9 Tourney). We hit Ronnie Lentz’s back yard honey hole. What a great day, we didn’t start fishing until 2:30 PM and finished about 06:30 PM. We ended up with 17 fish between us, I managed 6 bass and a couple pickerel and Ronnie had 7 bass and couple of pickerel. I also missed about three during the course of the outing. Five minutes after getting into the boat, Ronnie took me to his favorite hole and he cast a silver buddy out and wham first cast a nice 4 plus lber, Ronnie throws again second cast another nice 3 plus lb fish. I couldn’t tie a Silver Buddy on fast enough. Before we left that spot I had three bass and Ronnie had four. We continued around the lake trying different things and then we started to get into the Pig & Jig bite, before it was all over and to dark to fish we had our 17 fish. Our best 5 fish would have been an easy 18 lbs.

It’s was a cold and windy day for the first Boot’Legg Southside Tourney of the season. But it kicked off with a respectable field of 25 boats, with some of the best known names in the area, fishing. Water temp

ranged from 43 – 46 degrees, wind from the NE at about 15 knots. No real pattern emerged throughout the day. The fish seem to be staging for the upcoming spawn, by hanging right at the edges near deep water access; those anglers that found stumps or underwater structure near these areas were successful. Bobby and Randy generated the skill and knowledge to win the day. Dallas Eure brought the Lunker of the day in; he said the fish fought hard.

2004 Season

*** Boot’Legg Team Tourney Results 31 Oct 04 - by Neal Robinson

The Boot'Legg Open Team Trail held their 10th Event (3rd on the Southside) this past Sunday; October 31st, 2004. There were 23 Angler's that registered for the event, to include the return of our Tournament Director, James Williams. The Lake drawn was Burnt Mills, where we blasted the anglers off at approximately 0645hrs. Fishing on this day was not good for anyone on Burnt Mills. It may have been a nice day for the Angler's to go out fishing, but the results on Burnt Mills weren't to the satisfaction of the anglers that were there. I know most of the Angler's that registered and how they fish and for the amount of anglers that participated there, the results were painful. Of the 23 boats, only 11 weighed in fish; one of which had a limit (5) and the rest were just happy to have what they did. There was no particular pattern today; it was just a matter of how many casts you can make, enduring the long waiting period before it was time to weigh in and how lucky you can be at the end of the day. At the end of the day, there were 28 fish caught and released alive. The tournament total weight for the day was a meager 53.08lbs. The Big Fish for the day was 5.64lbs which was caught by the Team of Clay & Roland Powers. Here are the results of ALL the Anglers that weighed in fish for the day.

                   Team                                                          Total lbs          Lunker

*** Bass’n-9 Tourney Results Lake Cohoon/Meade 23 Oct 04 – by Bob Bullen

Jesse Munden takes 1st

The results from the first inter-club team tournament event of Bass-Jon’s verses Rule-9, proved to be one of the toughest fishing days all year. Eighteen boats fished in this Annual event of club against club. The total number of bass caught between both clubs was only 49 fish with a combine weight of merely 46.06 lbs. Bass-Jon’s won the event, pitting the best eight finishers from each club; with the total weight for the club making the final determination. Bass-Jon’s had 27.10 lbs verses Rule-9’s 15.12 lbs. Huck Palmatier of Bass-Jon’s had Lunker with nice 4 lb. Both clubs found fishing extremely tough and fish hard to come by, both lakes yielded few bass for anglers of 18 boats with only 4 limits being caught. Continuous weather changes the past week and cold front conditions the night before shut fishing down to almost a standstill. But all in all, fishing against a follow Jon-Boat was fun and both clubs had a chance to meet each other, exchange stories, and conduct ramp talk. Mike Schneider, President and founder of Rule-9 said it’s on for next year and looks forward to this being an annual face off. I look forward to fishing against Mike Schneider, Ronnie Lentz and all the anglers of Rule-9 next year.

Of the 18 boats that qualified, a mere 3 boats brought in a limit; just to show how tough this day was and only 2 of these boats brought in double digits to the scales.  There were only 44 fish caught (all released alive) and the total tournament weight tipped the scales at a small 77.40lbs with a Big Fish tie at 4.15lbs.

The Top 2 results couldn't be any closer with only .15lbs (or 2oz) separating the Top spot and both tied with Big Fish at 4.15lbs.  Here are the Top 5 Places for the Classic Event...

Angler of the Year went down to this final qualifying tournament between Gerald Gentry/James West and Jerry Jenkins/Ricky West.  Gerald/James took over the AOY Standings from Orece/Neal after the 2nd Event, where they lead for the AOY until the final event in October.  During the September Event, Gerald/James continued to hold on with a small cushion of 1lb 10oz over Jerry/Ricky.  When the final October Event came about, Gerald/James relinquished their AOY Standing to Jerry/Ricky by only 8 ounces.  Congrats to the Angler of the Year and a nice run for this title as well.  This makes their 2nd year in a row for Jerry/Ricky as AOY.
